RYYC April Newsletter
Edited by Christian Brash
Welcome to the first of our newsletters. We are aiming to produce a monthly newsletter during the sailing season dropping back to a bi-monthly one after. During the racing season, we’ll produce a regular round up of the results and an update of the standings in the season’s competitions. Contributions will always be welcomed. Any news or stories please let Charlotte or me know. We can help write these up. We’ll also keep you up to date about all the club events and the developing social programs.
AGM:
The AGM was a few weeks ago now; it was good to see a good turnout for this. For 2018 the RYYC has a new Commodore. After more than 10 years in post Steve Stanton is handing over the reins to Jeffrey Preece. Supporting Jeffrey as flag officers will be Julie Lodge as Vice Commodore, Steve Wood as Rear Commodore sailing, Joe Franks as Rear Commodore dinghies and Christian Brash Rear Commodore power. Julie is the first Lady Flag Officer for the club and it was great to see the story in the Bridlington Free Press and Bridlington Echo.
In recognition of his commitment to the club, Steve Stanton has been appointed Trustee, alongside the existing Trustees: Crispin Blyth, John Bullock, Richard Dunk and Tim Rix.
Anita Ingham was awarded the Alexandra cup (or Trustees Cup) for outstanding services to the club. Anita has put in a tremendous amount of work over the years and has been recently compiling the archives.
Tim Good won the Jubilee cup for his sailing log. Have a look at the website for more details.
Following the AGM; Will Bell and Sean Clarkson have been elected to the general committee alongside Gerald Dyson, Mark Eggleston, Greg Gray, Fred Ingham, Mike Kaye, David Podmore, Tony Saltonstall, Richard Sanderson, David Stamford, Bob Taylor and Philip Wright.
THE NEW TEAM:
Jeffrey:
Jeffrey is a familiar face around the club. Starting his sailing at Blyth Park he moved to the harbour. Over his time Jeffrey has owned a variety of boats including a Yorkshire One Design and a Contessa (Contessa Juliet). For this season Jeffrey’s Contessa has been replaced by a larger cruiser.
Julie:
Likewise, Julie is well known around the RYYC, sailing on Kir Royale with Steve Caines and Dennis and Leslie Bailey. Julie will be working on the club social programme, soon to be published.
Steve:
Steve will be running the harbour sailing program and all the details are now up on the club website. There is a very full program of racing planned for the year. Steve again is a very familiar face around the club and will be often seen on his Contessa True Blue.
Joe:
Joe is a formidable Dart 18 sailor and one of a band of RYYC Dart 18 sailors who have toured the UK and Europe. Joe has brought a round of the UK Dart 18 championships to Bridlington this year and is hoping for a round of the European Championships next year.
Christian:
I’m almost the new boy on the block only being a member for only 5 years! My sailing has been mostly in Wayfarer’s, Enterprises and Lasers over 30 years ago! However, Greg and Jeffrey have coped with my occasional crewing! Most of my boating has been on a RIB (Scooby Doo). On this and with a fellow member on his RIB, I’ve circumnavigated the British Isles (excluding Kilda and Shetland!).
DATA PROTECTION:
The law is changing and we’re about to lose touch with you!! The club alongside all other organisations, business, clubs and charities are facing greater obligations under the General Data Protection Act. You will have already received an email requesting your consent. It’s really great to see that so many have replied positively. It’s great to stay in touch with you – as without your consent we can no longer communicate with you and we can keep you updated with club news and events. If you haven’t already done so PLEASE give your consent!
WORKING WEEKEND:
It was a busy weekend both at the Club House and at Blyth Park. The Smithwick Room has been repainted and the curtains cleaned. The ladies’ cloakroom has also received a coat of paint.
Blyth Park was busy with a turnout over the weekend of over 20. Its looking good with the cadet’s hut and the deck outside the clubhouse being painted. The Club House has also been repaired and tidied. The marker buoys are all ready to be placed.
RYYC NATIONAL SUCCESS
The Dart 18 sailors had three members in the top six places at the Inland National Championships at Datchet. Matt Exon was an excellent second, Mike Gomme fourth and Rear Commodore Joe Franks sixth – a great result for the RYYC. We wish them further success as the season develops. There is a full report on the event on the club website (insert link) and the story should be in Yachts and Yachting. Joe and his team are looking forward to a busy summer at Blyth Park and please join in and support them.
SPONSORED WALK;
This event has been revived after a number of years having previously been a regular feature on the club calendar. This should have taken place earlier in the season, but the winter bad weather put paid to this.
43 members and friends enjoyed a sunny day walking from the RSPB centre at Bempton Cliffs to the Club House by the harbour. Halfway refreshments were provided by the Flamborough Lifeboat crew and family at South Landing. Here we saw the recovery of their RIB onto its launching trailer with the rescue helicopter hovering overhead.
There was a timely reminder of how important their services are with the wreckage of a yacht pulled up on the beach. The owner was the perfect example of how not to go sailing – no training, no insurance and apparently bought the boat off e-bay! Obviously not a member of the RYYC. He had run aground just off Flamborough, safely got himself ashore and ‘walked off’. It must be remembered that the ‘Lifeboats’ are all crewed mostly by volunteers and are a charity funded by donations.
Once back at the club a hearty lunch was provided. A significant sum was raised on the day with more donations still coming in. The walk is only part of the fundraising the RYYC does for the lifeboat and a cheque will be presented to the coxswains during regatta week.
A big thank you to Phil Wright for organising the event on behalf of the club.
CLUB SURVEY:
During May we are planning to undertake a club satisfaction survey. This is conjunction with the RYA. From this, we are looking to undertake a club development plan and input from all members via this survey will be an ideal step to help us plan for the future. This will be undertaken by TFL Research and is totally confidential and in adherence to the club’s privacy policy. Thank you in advance for responding to this.
ARE YOU A COMPETITIVE SAILOR!?
Can we enter a team into the NE Keelboat championship to be held in Scarborough? This costs £250 and takes place over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June. It’s a team of 5 and boats are supplied (Hunter 707’s). They are drawn at random and rotated. It’s a round robin event with 25 races per team with boat-based umpires with 4-6 boats in every race. If successful you then qualify for the National and the European Championships. It would be great to see the RYYC represented. One of the committee members has entered a Sheffield team – let’s see if Bridlington can beat them! Contact Charlotte for more information.
BLYTH PARK:
It’s good news to see a full program of sailing at Blyth Park. We’re looking to do more here as it’s an area where that club can grow outside of the confines of the harbour.
CLUBHOUSE:
The big tidy has started!
SOCIAL PROGRAM:
Club House Regulars:
- Every Monday there is Dominoes. All are very welcome, start time is 19.30 hours.
- Every Wednesday is Canasta. Again, it’s at 19.30 hours. New players are very welcome to join the group and learn. For those that don’t know Canasta is a card game believed to be a variant of 500 Rum, part of the rummy family of games.
- The 1st Wednesday of every Month is Quiz night.
It would be great to see these events being well supported.
Sailing:
After every sailing event they’ll be food provided in the clubhouse. It will be different from day to day and event to event. Come up and enjoy a drink and a bite to compare your racing form!! There will also be the regular class dinners.
SAILING PROGRAM:
This is now up on the club website. By the time you receive this the 1st race will have happened. The Top Dog race will have been held on Saturday 28th April. Serious racing starts on Sunday 6th May. For the first time in quite a few years, The Dowsing Weekend is planned for Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th June.
PIER HEAD:
From the outside, this is a scary job! However, with a little help and training, this can be enormously satisfying. We have two very experienced hands with David Stamford and Jim Evans. It would be great to see more involvement here. You don’t have to be a sailor and you may even get bought a drink afterwards for the hard work! We’re going to run some informal friendly training programmes in the next few months – we’ll keep you posted.
FOR THE DIARY:
- Blyth Park BBQ – 5th Everyone is welcome.
- Royal Wedding – 19th Rolling program of events throughout the day
- There will be another joint training evening and exercise with the Bridlington and Flamborough RNLI focusing on man-overboard recovery. We held one last year and the feedback from all parties was excellent.
- The regatta runs from Saturday 4th – Saturday 11th, As usual, there will be a full sailing and social program. Old favourites such as the pleasure cruise on the Yorkshire Bell will feature and we hope to have some new events as well.
- UK National Windsurfing Training Weekend – Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd
- The Dowsing Race Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June
- GP 4 – Bridlington’s rounds of the UK Dart 18 Association race series is on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th
- Class Dinners: There will be four held over the season. Watch out for the dates. These are key fundraising events for the club and also great fun.
- More to follow – watch the website and keep a look out for our regular updates.
SEA CADETS:
Since forming in 2015, Bridlington Sea Cadets have been working hard and have honed their boating skills under sail, oar and power.
They were challenged last year by Commander Charles Baggott-Jewit RN Area Chief of the Sea Cadet Corps, to achieve 30hrs of boating time each as part of the units development program.
30 hours may not sound like a lot but when you are only sailing once a week it takes some doing. Thankfully with the support of more established cadet units in Filey and Scarborough, many of the cadets have achieved significant skills. It will be our challenge in 2018 to ensure this happens at the RYYC.
The cadets have also enjoyed their opportunities to sail with the RYYC during 2017, joining in on the cadet sailing days and on some of the bang and go back nights when they were running.
The cadets are looking forward to 2018 boating season and are due to take ownership of a brand-new Trinity 500 rowing boat that will give them even more opportunities to get out on the water and to train the RYYC cadets how to row during the summer.
Tim Rix CBE
Congratulations to Tim Rix on receiving a CBE for services to the economy and regeneration in the Humber Region. Many of you will have seen this earlier in the year but it’s not often a member of the RYYC is made a CBE! Tim is a Trustee and keen supporter of the RYYC and can be seen sailing regularly in his YOD “Blackie”.
NEWSLETTER
I hope you’ve enjoyed the newsletter. It’s yours and the club’s letter and all input would be welcome. If you have any news, interesting stories, events planned please let Charlotte or me know and we’ll look to include these in the next newsletter!

RYYC Dart 18 Success
Last weekend Datchet Water Sailing Club hosted the Dart 18 GP2 & Inland Nationals in what was forecasted to be one of the hottest April weekends on record, I’m not sure it goes down in my record book as the hottest, but certainly as one of the shiftiest as far as the wind goes.
Datchet offers pretty good facilities for those wanting to camp/motorhome and nearby are a selection of reasonably priced hotels.
Saturday morning was light winds and sunshine perfect for setting up boats, for those that had forgotten or needed to replace parts, Brian Phipps from Winsport who supports several events throughout the year was on site with his mobile workshop. It was also good to see that Brian had delivered two pre-ordered boats, one of them to Rod Winrow from Worthing who was competing in the event.
After a short briefing 20 Dart 18’s were ready to take to the water for a 1pm start, however, this was delayed a little by lack of wind. Once Barry Peters (RO) managed to set a course in very challenging conditions due to the massive wind shifts we all got off to a clean start. With very light winds and huge shifts, it was almost impossible to be in the right place at the right time, during the race I expect we all found ourselves becalmed more than once. The leading pack managed to get themselves around the course whilst the rest of us gained and lost multiple places within a leg. David Lloyd won race one followed by James Head and Mat Exon. While the Race Committee were waiting for the wind to settle on a direction, the sun had been replaced with rain, water spouts, temperature drop and freak gusts. Eventually the 2nd course was laid and much like the first race, the shifts were all over the place, during the second upwind leg we must have put in nearly 20 tacks with very little course change. Rod Winrow in his new boat took line honours with Simon Moruzzi in another new boat in second place and Mat Exon (yet to buy a new boat) in third place. Race three never happened due to the conditions.
In the evening Barry had suggested two local pubs for eating with the intentions of all ending up in the same one later, as I was being a responsible father and returned to the hotel at a sensible time, I can’t give you any of the social gossip from later on.
Sunday was forecasted to be a sunny day with a building breeze which was pretty accurate, but not without shifts. Due to the wind building and the first 2 races being only 2 laps we managed 5 races in all. With such short races you had to get the perfect start and those that did went on to be top finishers. The following races were 3 laps with lots of holes in the wind, it never seemed possible to go the same way twice, most of us seemed to be trading places throughout most legs. Rod Winrow won the 3rd race, Mat Exon the 4th and taking the overall title David Lloyd won the 5th, 6th & 7th races.
Well done to David Lloyd and Hayley Smith who won the event on only 8 points out of 7 races, last year’s winners Mat and Jakob Exon in second place and Rod Winrow and Sarah Gee in third. Also, a big well done to the UKIDA handicap winners, 1st Paul Craft, 2nd Matt Kingsland and 3rd Joe and Harriet Franks.
Thanks to Barry for pretty much organising the event single handedly, although we wouldn’t expect anything less of Barry and to everyone else who helped and especially all the travellers who took part in a very successful championship.
The Dart 18 is a fabulous boat to sail or race at any level with friends or family, looking through the results the helm and crew combinations are parent and child, husband and wife, brothers and friends, all of these as competitive as each other. Many helms travel to events looking for crew so if you are interested in giving it a go look at the events calendar on www.dart18.com, follow our posts on UKIDA Facebook or contact a member of UKIDA. If you are new to sailing and would like to try a Dart with an experienced Dart sailor, contact your local club which can be found on the Dart18 website or go along to one of the Try A Dart events which again can be found on the Dart18 website.

The Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club Sponsored Walk in Aid of the RNLI Sunday 22nd April
Fabulous sunny day for the RYYC sponsored walk to raise funds for Bridlington and Flamborough RNLI. Half-way stop for refreshments at North Landing (Flamborough’s base) before walking on the cliff tops to the Clubhouse.
The Commodore, Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore pictured at the completion of the walk before joining the rest of the members for lunch.
This event has been revived after a number of years having previously been a regular feature on the club calendar. This should have taken place earlier in the season, but the winter bad weather put paid to this.

Working Weekend April 2018
Thank you to those members who came to help out this weekend and worked so hard, both at the main clubhouse and at Blyth Park. The atmosphere at Blyth was fantastic with a real ‘can do’ ethos evident – even the fog on Sunday didn’t manage to dampen spirits! Tasks completed include re-roofing the Transline, treating the woodwork on the cadet building and decking and a significant clearing of the compound. The Transline was given an internal ‘spring clean’ and the whole Park looked absolutely transformed. Back at the main clubhouse, the front dining room was stripped and re-painted from head to toe. The velvet curtains have been dry cleaned and will be re-hung with new poles to finish a fabulous looking dining area. The Flag Officers cannot thank enough those members who came along to help transform these areas of the club.
