Work on the new boathouse facility on the Promenade area between the Spa complex and the new YWA building commenced in September 2015 and is now complete.
The new boathouse itself has been so designed to complement the Spa facility/building. It will be user friendly and should be an enormous draw and tourist attraction as well as being the focal point of the Search & Rescue facility in this area. It brings together under one roof the new Shannon Lifeboat, crew facilities, the Inshore Lifeboat, the Lifeguard facilities and the shop.
The new Shannon Lifeboat is costing circa £2.5 million; it is a state-of-the-art lifeboat and will replace the Mersey Class lifeboat currently on station, which has served the station so well over the past twenty or so years. The new boathouse is costing circa £3 million – a total expenditure of £5.5 million in addition to the sea wall costs. The new Shannon is scheduled to arrive on station next month..
Overall this demonstrates the RNLI’s strategic importance of Bridlington as a Search & Rescue point on the Yorkshire coast and is a continuation of the long history of Bridlington Lifeboat.
