Runswick Bay Regatta 2010

Report by Joe Franks

Last weekend, 4/5 Sept, four teams from RYYC hit the road for the short journey up the coast to Runswick Bay Sailing club for their annual regatta.

With a nice steady breeze forecast it was a good chance to test themselves against a fleet of 10 local boats with Tim Roberts the local hotshot who was going to be the man to beat.

Saturday morning dawned to really light winds and bright sunshine; not ideal!

Racing started and the wind increased to a steady force 4.

in race 1 Matt Exon and Joe Franks were first to the windward mark followed by Tim Roberts and Jay Round, Tim showing his local knowledge  and taking 2nd place just behind Matt Exon with Jay Round taking 3rd place.

The Bridlington boys now had an idea of the complicated wind patterns due to the surrounding cliffs and this showed with race 2 placings being Matt 1st, Joe 2nd and Jay 3rd. Race 3 finished with Joe 1st, Matt 2nd and Jay 3rd again.

After a excellent evening in the club house including a lobster supper, Sunday morning came to early for some, particularly for some who made the most of the Co-op's special offer on stella !

The racing was not for the faint hearted on sunday with a fast reach added to the course mixed with a force 5 gusting 6 breeze, leading to many capsizes the Brid lads showing there love of the windy conditions with Joe taking three 1sts, Matt taking three 2nds and Jay taking two 3rds and having to retire the last race due to a problem with his pole.

All in all this was a brilliant event and we were made to feel very welcome by the guys at Runswick Bay.

1st Joe Franks & Dan Wilson       6 points
2nd Matt Exon & Yvette Barrrnes 8 points
3rd Jay Round & Will Bell         15 points
