After last week’s successful RYYC at Bridlington, the RYYC sent a team up to Scarborough to challenge for their regatta over the bank holiday weekend, hoping to emulate last year’s success…and they didn’t let the town down!
In the Heavyweight A class, Starchick was the sole representative amongst 10 other competitors. Bob Wallace, Jonny Peacock and team continued their success from the RYYC’s regatta by claiming 1st place in the first 2 races of the weekend on Saturday, but were unlucky to not be able to follow this up on Sunday, coming home in 2nd and 3rd in races 3 and 4 respectively. With the final standings showing they were ties for 1st place overall, they had to beat local favourite ‘Revenge’ in the final race. However, they were forced to retire from race 5 with major kit damage, leaving them in 2nd overall.
2 Squibs entered the Lightweight Class to take on a fleet of 13 other boats from Scarborough and Whitby. Trio, sailed by Sean Clarkson and Jonny Copsey, and Alchemy, sailed by Gerard Dyson and Adam Saltonstall, showed excellent form throughout the weekend in this class. Alchemy won all 5 races through Saturday, Sunday and Monday, whilst Trio claimed 4 2nd places having been unlucky to run out of time in race 1 by a mere 3 seconds! Alchemy and Trio went on to take 1st and 2nd overall respectively in the class.
Heavyweight class B saw 4 entrants from the RYYC, with high hopes of placing well. Race 1 was won by local boat Loafer, whilst the RYYC’s True Blue won race 2 and the RYYC’s Contessa Juliet won races 3 & 4. Although none of the Bridlington boats entered race 5 due to heavy winds, Contessa Juliet managed to win the class overall with True Blue in 2nd. Bridlington-based Coriander and Anna came a very creditable 4th and 9th respectively out of 13 entries.
The 5th race of the weekend also formed the regatta’s ‘Pursuit’ race. This race is always keenly contested and both Scarborough and visiting boats enjoyed fantastic racing on the final day of the bank holiday weekend. With Alchemy and Trio having the weakest handicaps, they were given a head start and were chased by the rest of the fleet over the ensuing hour and a half. However, having given away their lead to ‘local knowledge’ Alchemy regained their lead and learnt from their mistake to lead over the line to claim the victory in the pinnacle race of the week, whilst Trio managed to hold of the majority of the pack to come home in 8th out of 23 starters. Gerard Dyson and Adam Saltonstall in Alchemy also claimed victory over the whole fleet as the best performing yacht over the whole weekend in any class, having claimed the lowest points tally in the largest fleet.
Other than at club racing, Team RYYC’s next chances to fly the Yorkshire flag are at the Squib South Coast Championships, at Dartmouth in September, and Inland Championships, at Rutland in October.
