Joining the RYYC and Dinghies@RYYC

We are always keen to recruit new members and aim to make the joining procedure as painless as possible. However, this inevitably involves some bureaucracy. We hope it is not too onerous and that the following notes and the rest of this web site will answer most of your queries. If there are points on which you would like clarification, do not hesitate to phone or email the RYYC Secretary. Use the links in the following table to find out more about joining and then go to the application form. RYYC Regatta

Notes:

Benefits of Joining
By joining the RYYC you join not only a traditional yacht club with its smart harbourside clubhouse but also a rapidly developing dinghy section, DInghies@RYYC. Both locations run a programme of regular club racing and open events and both have an annual regatta. There is a thriving Social Programme throughout the year and especially during the regattas and open meetings. [back]
Types of Membership and Subscriptions
Further Costs
Dinghies@RYYC will charge an annual berthing fee for the storage of boats at Blyth Park, while boats kept in the harbour attract harbour fees, race fees and Ferry Boat fees. [back]
Training
RYYC is a certified RYA Training Establishment. See the Training Web site for details. [back]
Classes Sailed
Class racing for Squib, Yorkshire One Design, Contessa 26, Dart 18. Handicap racing for other keelboats and dinghies. See the class guide. [back]
Personal Details
The Application Form asks for your name, address, phone number and email. Currently RYYC rules require a proposer and seconder for a membership application. This can be a problem for newcomers to the area but that can be sorted out when you visit the club to have a look round prior to joining. The rules are currently under review. [back]
Sailing Preferences
The RYYC is divided into two largely autonomous sections for the purposes of sailing. The keelboat section is based at Bridlington Harbour, while dinghies are sailed from Dinghies@RYYC situated at Blyth Park on the beach about a mile and a half to the south. Most members sail from one or the other location, but it is entirely possible to do both. [back]
Boats
You don't have to own a boat to join the RYYC, but if you do then you will find accommodation in the harbour for keelboats (see Berthing, below for limits) or a secure compound at Blyth Park for dinghies. Members also keep sailboards, sea kayaks and other recreational wind craft. Power vessels are acceptable at both locations, but at Dinghies@RYYC, Blyth Park, limitations on launching facilities mean that only a maximum of 6 power boats that may be used as patrol and rescue craft can be accommodated. To apprise the Club of your berthing needs, please complete the appropriate post-joining forms for keelboats and dinghies after your membership has been processed. [back]
Sailing Experience
Any sailing experience is welcome but not essential - RYYC run accredited RYA training courses for beginners upward, and there are often opportunities to crew in both keelboats and dinghies. RYA qualifications in basic powerboat handling and Race Management are particularly welcome, as are the set of qualifications up to and including Yachtmaster. Your experience can be noted in the appropriate post-joining forms for keelboats and dinghies. [back]
RYYC Training
The club would like to know if you have attended an RYYC course so that we can tell how far the training section is an aid to recruitment! [back]
Berthing
Yachts up to 40' loa and less than 7' draft can be permanently accommodated in the harbour, while centreboard dinghies and beach catamarans can be kept in a secure compound at Dinghies@RYYC, Blyth Park. [back]
Facilities
See Harbour Facilities or Blyth Park. [back]
Kindred Spirits
There are Class Captains representing the racing and cruising classes, and an online crew register. [back]
Racing Programmes
There are separate programmes for the Keelboat fleet and Dinghies@RYYC. [back]
Your Other Skills
The Club relies for much of its successful running on the skills of the membership. It's not just one's primary skill, (the one that you 're taking up sailing to get away from!), but all kinds of other skills. For instance you might have an RYA qualification in Race Management, or be used to organising events in some other field. Your skills and occupation can be noted in the appropriate post-joining forms for keelboats and dinghies. [back]
